23 Things I’ve Learned In 23 Years

I turned 23 last week, and each year as I get older, I start to think more and more about life and what I’ve learned each year around the sun. I know there’s a lot more I’m going to learn but, I think I can say I’m at my peak of wisdom (LOL). So, I figured I’d compile a list and share whatever little bit of knowledge I’ve learned in my 23 years in hopes that you gain something from it!

  1. Surround yourself with people that pull the magic out of you, not the madness. I don’t think I’d be as happy as I am or even doing the things I’m doing now if it wasn’t for finding people that are on the same wave as me.
  2. If you’re inspired by the world allow the world to be inspired by you. (Shout out J.Cole for this one)
  3. Be happy for the next person’s success. Seeing someone succeed genuinely inspires me, and it’s crucial to feel joy for others if not, you’re just blocking yourself from achieving. Which leads me to;
  4. Follow your dreams. Big or small. Who cares what anyone has to say if it makes you feel whole then go for it.
  5. Be a citizen of the world. Take any and every travel opportunity you can! Honestly, this one is so important; I feel like no experience is better than the one you gain when you visit somewhere new. I always feel so inspired after I take a trip. Just because you leave doesn’t mean you can’t come back, but don’t stop yourself from seeing new parts of the world because one place is your home.
  6. Fuel yourself by your failures. If you give up when you fail, you’ll never get anywhere.
  7. Take care of your credit. LOL. Sounds like such an obvious one but sometimes… the thrill of life can overcast the need to keep them points high!
  8. While I’m on the topic of “taking care” Take your health serious not just physical but mental. I can’t stress this one enough, seriously if you need any medical help, get it! Especially if you’re on your parent’s insurance still!
  9. Cardi B is probably the answer. Her music and interviews will instantly put you in a good mood when you need a pick me up or want to feel good. (Don’t judge me! She’s so funny and her music is so good IDC)
  10. The only person you need to impress is yourself! So be yourself and love yourself all ways, always. You are enough.
  11. Just because you like to be alone, DOESN’T MEAN YOU’RE ALONE!
  12. BUT, spend time alone. I think I enjoy my alone time more than I probably should but it’s the best feeling knowing you can be pleased alone.
  13. Give what you get in relationships. Whether it’s a friendship or a romantic one, it has to be 50/50.
  14. Just because you don’t talk 24/7 or every day doesn’t mean you aren’t someone’s friend. I’m a grandma deep down, and I like to be home by 7 or 8 pm most nights so, I don’t see my friends a lot, but I love when we can meet up and act as if no time has passed.
  15. Let the people that are important to you know that they are. Don’t take the people you love for granted.
  16. Chicken tenders have and always will be my go to, and honestly, I’ve fully accepted it now.
  17. TRY. NEW. THINGS. You’ll be so surprised at what you end up liking. (This one took me a long time, and I still struggle I won’t lie. 😂)
  18. Being kind is so important. There’s enough hate in this world, don’t be part of that. Be kind to others but be kind to yourself too! If you don’t like something or someone keep that ish to yourself or at least far away from me🙅🏼
  19. Agree to disagree and Pick your battles.
  20. There is always more to learn, and you’re never done growing. Leave room for improvement. Don’t ever stop being a student.
  21. Stand up for yourself; it’s okay to speak your mind and to say no if you’re doing it with grace and not to be malicious.
  22. Don’t take social media too seriously. I struggled with this for a while; I’m not going to lie. But, I’ve learned to take things on with more of a light heart.
  23. Sometimes you need to let go. You don’t have to forgive, but accept what you cant change and do what you have to do to move forward and be happy. I saved this one for last because this is the main lesson I carried with me at 22. Whether it be a friendship or a relationship, if it’s not helping you grown then let it go.

I look forward to seeing what lessons twenty- three will bring. Let me know in the comments below if there’s anything that inspired you a little bit in this list or if there’s anything you’ve learned outside of this list that would be important for other people to learn as well!
